An interview with Fairhazel and BEL

Updated: Nov 25

We got to chat with singer/songwriters Fairhazel and BEL and it went a little something like this...

Lets start with Fairhazel...

How did you get your start in music?

I started taking piano lessons when I was 3 or 4 and the teacher had a vending machine of candy in her room that she would use to reward me when I did things correctly which is probably why I’m a chocolate addict now.

Where are you from?

I was born in Brighton in England but grew up between South Africa, France and the UK.

Tell us the story behind your new song?

I had written a few lines of the song, the first verse and a bit of the chorus, and I really loved it but I couldn’t finish it and nothing I was trying seemed like it was good enough for what I thought the song deserved. I met Bel on the Clubhouse app and we decided to meet up in person. After working on a song that she had brought, which I can’t wait to release, we were looking for the next one, and I brought this one out and it just clicked.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

Record some music, take a walk, listen to a podcast, spend time with my wife.

What is your dream superpower?

Invisibility. Maybe teleportation to save travel costs but I guess if I was invisible, I could get on a plane for free anyway.

What is one album that changed your life?

The Party by Andy Shauf. It blew my mind in the uniqueness of the lyrics and melodies and production. Such a great album.

What’s up next for you?

I have a ton of songs in the bank ready to go, and I have a list of 241 songs in various stages of completion! More shows, less social media, more music.

BEL...

How did you get your start in music?

I started writing songs in high school and decided to take it more seriously when I got to college. I’d find people to play shows with around campus at UCLA and just kept trying to meet more people to write and play with. I stayed in LA after graduating and played more shows until finally recording my first EP that I put out last year!

Where are you from?

I’m from Clovis, California! Central Valley baby.

Tell us the story behind your new song?

I met Hugh last year through an audio app called Clubhouse! It was before shows had started up again and everyone was still doing virtual shows. I heard him play and really loved his music so we connected and decided to write some songs together! He showed me a song he had been working on and I loved it so much I wrote a second verse for it and it just kinda came together really quickly. We had a lot of fun making it. It feels like I’ve known Hugh for a long time.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?

Go for a long walk & maybe find a nice place to watch the sunset with friends!

What is your dream superpower?

Teleportation

What is one album that changed your life?

Sgt. Pepper was the first album I was ever obsessed with. I’d love to one day make a concept album.

What’s up next for you?

I’m finishing up my 2nd EP and going to start releasing some singles off it early this year! I’m super excited to keep putting out more music and writing more too.
